New regulation on the way for GSS debts: 1.5 million people's debts to be wiped out!

The government is preparing to take an important step regarding General Health Insurance (GSS) debts. A new regulation is on the agenda for citizens who have difficulty paying their debts. Within this scope, the debts of approximately 10 million people, exceeding 100 billion TL, will be deferred. In addition, a total of 3.1 billion TL in debts from 2015 will be completely wiped out.

According to the report by Takvim, this regulation, which is expected to be added to the omnibus bill to be submitted to Parliament, includes significant changes regarding the deferral and cancellation of GSS debts. GSS is a system that has been in effect since 2012 and covers all citizens under mandatory health insurance. This system covers employees, those receiving income or pensions from the Social Security Institution (SGK), employers, foreigners, ethnic Turks, and those performing military service.

As of today, nearly 10 million citizens have GSS premium debts exceeding 100 billion TL. Since 2015, efforts have been made to facilitate the collection of these debts through various restructuring regulations. Once the new regulation is enacted, a total of 3.1 billion TL in debt, consisting of 554 million TL in principal debt and 2.57 billion TL in late payment penalties and interest for 1 million 491 thousand people, will be completely wiped out. This step will relieve millions of citizens by freeing them from their debt burden.
