Oil discovered off the coast of Çayeli delights residents
The discovery of oil off the coast of the Çayeli district in Rize has delighted the local residents.

Prof. Dr. Nafiz Maden, a Geological Engineer and Department Head at the Faculty of Natural Sciences of Gümüşhane University, set out to sea in September to collect samples to determine whether there are oil reserves in the Eastern Black Sea. He collected samples from layers found on the water's surface approximately 7 miles off the coast of the Çayeli district and sent them to the Turkish Petroleum Corporation (TPAO) to learn about the oil potential. The results of the samples sent to TPAO reached Maden. The analysis results received by Maden revealed that the liquid seeping to the surface of the sea was crude oil. Upon hearing the news that crude oil had been found off the coast of Çayeli, the residents of Çayeli were delighted.

Stating that any resource found within Turkey's borders is pleasing to the citizens, Şükrü Taş said, “By God, if it has been found, this oil will contribute to the country's economy. This is a pleasing thing for us. As long as something comes out of the soil. We are passionate about this. Anything that comes from the soil or the sea has always developed this country. It has pluses and no minuses.”

Expressing that the oil to be extracted will be beneficial for Turkey, Hasan Yener said, “By God, it is a good thing for our region. This oil needs to be extracted for the benefit of society. This oil has been there since the Ottoman period. It will be something beneficial for Çayeli and our region. As citizens, we are happy. It is enough that it is extracted and is beneficial for Turkey.”
Stating that it is good news for future generations, Recep Dereci said, “It was very good for Çayeli. The Rize-Artvin airport was built, and it was very useful for Çayeli. When the oil is extracted, Çayeli will develop even more. We have grown old, but it was very good for the future.”
“Let the generations that come after us be comfortable”
Güngör Köse, who stated that the discovery of oil would make future generations comfortable, said, “We were very happy that oil was found. We used to see it sometimes when we were swimming in our childhood. We thought it was oil. At that time, our state's resources were limited. They will make us happy. We want our country to be rich. Let the generations that come after us here be comfortable. Let our dependence on foreign countries decrease.”
