Research conducted by Amazon Turkey in collaboration with Twentify sheds light on the New Year's habits of people in Turkey, how they celebrate, who they buy gifts for the most, and many other topics.
According to the statement from the company, Amazon Turkey and Twentify have carried out a study that reveals people's perspectives on the New Year in Turkey and consumer shopping habits in online retail as the new year approaches.
According to the research results, 64 percent of participants stated that they carefully prepare for and celebrate the New Year every year, while 36 percent said they celebrate the New Year to fit in with their family or social circles.
While 65 percent of participants celebrate the New Year only on the night of December 31, 35 percent participate in various celebrations with different groups before this night, in addition to celebrating with their loved ones on the night of December 31. Participants stated that gift-giving is one of the most important activities of the New Year period at a rate of 53 percent, while planning a meal for New Year's Eve was the second most important activity at 37 percent, and decorating a tree was the third most important activity for participants at 36 percent.
Clothing and accessories were the most preferred items for gift-giving. These are followed by perfume and personal care products at 64 percent and jewelry at 46 percent.
Partners top the list of people receiving New Year's gifts (75 percent), followed by children (62 percent), highlighting the importance of family-oriented and romantic celebrations.
While mothers (55 percent) receive more gifts than fathers (43 percent), the fact that siblings (44 percent) are also popular recipients points to cultural gift-giving norms and the value of family bonds.
The fact that 30 percent of participants stated they prefer to buy gifts for themselves also reveals a trend toward self-gifting.
Gifts are most frequently purchased through online channels
When looking at preferences while purchasing gifts, usability (42 percent) and quality (41 percent) were the most important criteria in gift selection. Online platforms were the most used channels for purchasing New Year's gifts. 57 percent of participants stated that they prefer online stores to buy New Year's gifts for their loved ones.
In Turkey, where different cultures blend, many different celebrations can take place, from the breaking of pomegranates in front of doors to represent abundance and prosperity, to "Nardugan," a winter solstice celebration that some researchers believe is the ancestor of all Christmas tree celebrations around the world.
In addition to these, wearing red socks and underwear, eating 12 grapes under the table, and kissing loved ones are among the New Year's activities that Turks believe bring luck throughout the year.
