Bus travel, which has long been seen as an economical option for intercity transportation in Turkey, has begun to lose its appeal due to recent price increases. It is particularly noteworthy that plane tickets are cheaper for trips to holiday destinations.

For example, while a bus ticket on the Istanbul-Bodrum route is 1200 lira, a plane ticket is sold for 900 lira. On the Istanbul-Konya route, the bus is 1500 lira, while the plane is 810 lira. On the Istanbul-Ankara route, the bus is 550 lira and the plane is 810 lira. On the Istanbul-Gaziantep route, the bus is 1200 lira and the plane is 1500 lira. On the Istanbul-Trabzon route, the bus is 1500 lira and the plane is 1200 lira, and on the Istanbul-Mardin route, the bus is set at 1500 lira and the plane at 2800 lira.

While air travel has become more advantageous for short and medium distances, buses can still be an economical option for long distances. However, the general trend shows that bus travel is losing its "affordable" image.

While prices influence passenger preferences, factors such as time, comfort, and luggage also play an important role. While there have been increases of up to 45 percent in bus ticket prices over the last year, a price stabilization of nearly 20 percent has been observed in plane tickets thanks to campaigns by airline companies. This situation has reduced the passenger share of bus travel by 12 percent, while increasing the share of air travel by 18 percent.

Experts predict that this trend will continue with the growth of low-cost airline companies and the spread of early-bird ticket campaigns. It is stated that bus companies need to focus on comfort, service quality, and flexible luggage options to stand out in the competition. Bus travel is no longer just an economical option, but is becoming a model that offers comfort and flexibility. Air travel, on the other hand, is preferred for its speed and cost advantages.
