Prospect magazine readers name Daron Acemoğlu 'World's Top Thinker' for 2024

Readers of the Britain-based Prospect magazine have named Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) faculty member and economist Prof. Dr. Daron Acemoğlu as the "World's Top Thinker" for 2024.

Prospect magazine described Prof. Dr. Acemoğlu's work as follows:

"What makes Acemoğlu the thinker for 2024, a time when many harbor deep anxieties about what the rapid rise of AI will mean for work and life in our unequal society, is his refusal to believe that. Acemoğlu warns that, for all its potential for good, 'technology is often immiserating for certain groups'"

According to the magazine, which notes that Acemoğlu differs from other economists, traditional economists insist that everything will work out in the long run, whereas Acemoğlu, when looking at the past, finds a long stretch of history where those new opportunities never arrived.
