QR code system for license plates implemented with the new year
As of January 1, 2024, the QR code application for license plates has come into effect in Turkey. All registration plates printed from this date onwards will feature a QR code. The penalty for using a fake license plate has been set at 32,170 TL, and since it constitutes the crime of forgery of official documents, it can carry a prison sentence of 2 to 5 years.

In addition to the existing features on vehicle license plates, the application of placing a QR code between the province code and the letter group began at the start of the year. In cases such as initial registration, license plate changes, or license plate renewals, QR-coded plates will be printed and provided to those who request them for a fee.
According to the report by Hürriyet, this aims to eliminate APP license plate manufacturers who operate in unauthorized workshops and apply fake association seals. Due to the production of fake license plates, many illegal methods such as theft and fraud in vehicle sales are being employed. Furthermore, because of these fake plates, the owners of the real plates are also suspected and may have to engage in legal battles for years.
Since vehicles with APP plates do not carry genuine license plates and face the possibility of being banned from traffic, those using APP plates need to start using the standard, state-issued plates as soon as possible.
PENALTY FOR FAKE LICENSE PLATES
The penalty for using a fake license plate has become 32,170 Turkish Lira, and you may also face a prison sentence of 2 to 5 years for forgery of official documents.
WHICH LICENSE PLATES WILL BE CHANGED?
In cases of initial registration, lost license plates, damaged license plates, and plates that fail inspection, they will be renewed and delivered to their owners as QR-coded plates.
There will be no changes to currently used license plates, and they will continue to be used.
A 15x15 mm QR code and a 12-digit serial number will be processed horizontally between the province code and the letter group. Authorized police officers and members of the gendarmerie will be able to check the QR code on the plate and quickly access the necessary information.
