Regulation on food additives updated in line with EU regulation changes

Regulations in Turkey have been amended in parallel with the European Union's (EU) updates to legislation defining the specifications for food additives.

The Regulation on Amending the Turkish Food Codex Regulation on Specifications for Food Additives, prepared by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, has been published in the Official Gazette and entered into force.

With this regulation, changes in the EU regulation have been reflected in Turkish legislation. In this context, specifications for the food additives "E 422 Glycerol," "E 475 Polyglycerol Esters of Fatty Acids and E 476 Polyglycerol Polyricinoleate," and "E 471 Mono- and Diglycerides of Fatty Acids" have been modified.

These changes have lowered the acceptable levels of toxic elements. Maximum limits have been set for certain impurities. A maximum erucic acid content has been established, and maximum limits for arsenic, lead, mercury, and cadmium have been reduced.

New limits have been set for "3-monochloropropane diol (3-MCPD)" and "3-MCPD fatty acid esters" as well as "glycidyl fatty acid esters (expressed as glycidol)," with lower limits established for infants and young children.
