Samsung overtakes Apple in smartphone sales

With 289.4 million smartphones sold in the first quarter of the year, Samsung has become the world's top-selling smartphone company.

While 289.4 million smartphones were sold globally in the first quarter of the year, Samsung managed to surpass Apple with a 20.8 percent market share.

International data firm IDC released data on global smartphone shipments for the first quarter of 2024.

Accordingly, 289.4 million smartphones were sold in the global market during the January-March period of the year.

Smartphone sales in the first 3 months of the year increased by 7.8 percent compared to the same period last year, with Samsung becoming the company that sold the most smartphones.

Samsung, which managed to sell 60.1 million smartphones in the first quarter, surpassed Apple in the ranking of the world's largest smartphone sellers.

While sales of the South Korean smartphone manufacturer Samsung fell by 0.7 percent in the first quarter compared to the same period last year, its market share reached 20.8 percent.

Apple's sales in the January-March period fell by 9.6 percent to 50.1 million. The company's market share dropped from 20.7 percent to 17.3 percent.

The decline in iPhone shipments was caused by restrictions on the use of Apple-branded devices by employees in companies and government institutions in China.

Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi's 33.8 percent increase in sales in the first quarter drew attention. The company ranked third with 40.8 million units sold, while its market share rose from 11.4 percent to 14.1 percent.

Chinese manufacturer Transsion also placed fourth in the same period, increasing its market share to 9.9 percent with 28.5 million phone sales.

During the same period, Chinese manufacturer Oppo ranked fifth by selling 25.2 million smartphones. The company's sales in the first quarter of the year decreased by 8.5 percent compared to the same quarter of 2023, while its market share fell from 10.3 percent to 8.7 percent.

Sales of other smartphone brands such as LG, Vivo, Nokia, and Blackberry were calculated at 84.7 million units, with their market share determined to be 29.3 percent.
