Statement from the DMM regarding the 25 percent rent increase cap!

Minister of Justice Yılmaz Tunç made a statement regarding the 25 percent cap on rents, saying, "There is no longer a need for the situation to continue."

Following Tunç's statement, a clarification came from the Presidency's Directorate of Communications Center for Combating Disinformation (DMM).

The DMM denied reports shared by some social media accounts claiming that "it has been decided not to extend the 25 percent rent increase cap application."

In the post made on the DMM's social media account, the following statements were used: "The claim shared by some social media accounts that 'it has been decided not to extend the 25 percent rent increase cap application' is not true. Following complaints from our citizens regarding exorbitant rents, a regulation stipulating that residential rent increases shall not exceed 25 percent of the previous rental year's price was accepted in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) in June 2022. In accordance with the provisions of the Temporary Article 2 added to the Code of Obligations No. 6098, which states that the rent increase rate in residential lease agreements is limited, effective from July 2, 2023, the 25 percent rent increase rate was extended until July 1. It has been determined that no statement has been made by any official institution regarding the 'lifting of the 25 percent rent increase cap.' It has been determined that the statement by Minister of Justice Yılmaz Tunç, which is cited as the basis for the claims, did not use the phrase 'it has been decided not to extend the 25 percent rent increase cap application.'"

At the end of the statement, it was noted: "Therefore, Minister Tunç's statement is not that 'such a decision has been taken,' but rather that 'he has such an expectation.'"
