The claim circulating in political circles regarding the government's new price hike formula: Gradual

The 25-cubic-meter natural gas subsidy, which had been in effect for a year, ended as of May 1, 2024. As citizens wonder whether price hikes will follow the end of the program, a new claim has been put forward by an official who wished to remain anonymous.

The program providing up to 25 cubic meters of free natural gas for kitchen and hot water consumption, which began in April 2023, ended as of May 1, 2024. Following the conclusion of the 25-cubic-meter free natural gas program, citizens are now wondering whether there will be price hikes on their bills.

Speaking to Bloomberg on condition of anonymity, an official stated that the government is working on a plan to set different natural gas and electricity tariffs for different income groups.

It is noted that the government aims to support low-income households with lower bills, and that the implementation could mean that energy tariffs may increase gradually as income or consumption levels rise.

The official said that the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources has been working on this plan for some time.

BILLS TO INCREASE

As of May 1, an additional cost for the 25 cubic meters will be reflected on all natural gas bills. Although it varies between cities, the reflection of this cost on the bill will be approximately 150 TL.
