The fact that the sliding scale system, which was implemented to balance the tax burden on fuel prices, will end on October 1, 2026, has brought expectations of a new price hike for gasoline to the agenda.
The system was put into effect with a Presidential Decree dated March 4, 2026, following sharp rises in oil prices and geopolitical risks originating from the Middle East. Within the scope of the mechanism, temporary adjustments were made to the Special Consumption Tax (SCT) to limit the direct reflection of price increases onto the consumer.
Economy reporter Olcay Aydilek stated that with the end of the sliding scale system, the SCT amount on gasoline, which is currently 4.43 TL per liter, will rise to 14.83 TL. According to Aydilek's calculation, with the VAT effect added to the 10.40 TL SCT increase, the total hike could reach 12.48 TL.
In his social media post, Aydilek used the phrase "the largest price hike of all time for gasoline" and suggested that if the increase occurs, the liter price of gasoline could suddenly exceed 90 TL.
The expected increase is being closely monitored due to the impact of fuel prices on both household budgets and general prices through transportation costs.
