TÜİK announces June unemployment figures

According to data from TÜİK, the unemployment rate in June increased by 0.7 percent, reaching 9.2 percent. Accordingly, the number of unemployed people in June rose by 234 thousand compared to the previous month, reaching 3 million 305 thousand.

The Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK), which is often a subject of debate due to the figures it releases to the public, has announced its unemployment data.

According to the results of the Household Labor Force Survey, the number of unemployed persons aged 15 and over increased by 234 thousand in June 2024 compared to the previous month, reaching 3 million 305 thousand. The unemployment rate increased by 0.7 percentage points to 9.2 percent. The unemployment rate was estimated at 7.6 percent for men and 12.4 percent for women.

EMPLOYMENT RATE WAS 49.3 PERCENT

The number of employed persons decreased by 341 thousand in June 2024 compared to the previous month, falling to 32 million 522 thousand, while the employment rate decreased by 0.6 percentage points to 49.3 percent. This rate was 66.9 percent for men and 32.1 percent for women.

The labor force decreased by 107 thousand in June 2024 compared to the previous month, falling to 35 million 827 thousand, and the labor force participation rate decreased by 0.2 percentage points to 54.4 percent. The labor force participation rate was 72.4 percent for men and 36.7 percent for women.

UNEMPLOYMENT RATE AMONG YOUTH IS 17.6 PERCENT

The unemployment rate for the youth population, covering the 15-24 age group, increased by 1.7 percentage points compared to the previous month, reaching 17.6 percent. In this age group, the unemployment rate was estimated at 14.8 percent for men and 23.2 percent for women.

The seasonally and calendar-adjusted average actual weekly working hours of those employed and at work during the reference period increased by 0.1 hours in June 2024 compared to the previous month, reaching 44.0 hours.

The rate of idle labor, consisting of time-related underemployment, potential labor force, and the unemployed, increased by 3.8 percentage points in June 2024 compared to the previous month, reaching 29.2 percent. While the combined rate of time-related underemployment and the unemployed was 20.2 percent, the combined rate of the unemployed and the potential labor force was estimated at 19.5 percent.
