YENİ Party Chairman Özgür Özel reacts to diesel price hike: “A 100-lira banknote will now buy 1 liter of diesel”

YENİ Party Chairman Özgür Özel reacted on his social media account to the fact that diesel prices will exceed 100 liras as of midnight. Özel stated that the increase would not be limited to fuel pumps but would also be reflected in basic consumer goods.

In his statement, Özel drew attention to the increase in the liter price of diesel and compared the purchasing power of a 100-lira banknote. Noting that the 100-lira note, which entered circulation in 2009, could buy 40 liters of diesel at that time, Özel stated that today the same banknote would only buy 1 liter of diesel.

Pointing to the share of SCT (Special Consumption Tax) and VAT in the liter price of diesel, Özel said, “20 liras of this 100 liras will consist of SCT and VAT.”

Recalling President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s statement before the 2023 elections regarding the discovery of 100 thousand barrels of oil per day in Gabar, Özel noted that the price of a liter of diesel was 20 liras at that time, while today it will exceed 100 liras.

The hike in diesel will not stay at the pump. It will be reflected as a price increase on everything from fruits and vegetables to school buses, from pins to needles. It is not meat that will be boiling in kitchens, but more trouble.

Arguing that citizens no longer have the strength to bear this burden, Özel said that his party’s proposal is the immediate removal of taxes on fuel. Özel stated, “Do not persecute the nation further on your way out; take the necessary steps. In any case, this injustice will be solved at its root under a YENİ Party government.”
