While fraud cases in online shopping are increasing every day, many consumers give up, thinking they have lost their money.

However, for those who pay with a credit or debit card, there is a much faster way to get the money back without waiting for court processes that take months: Chargeback.

WHAT IS A CHARGEBACK AND HOW DOES IT WORK?

A chargeback is when a cardholder disputes a transaction and requests a refund through the bank. In this system, which operates within the framework of consumer law and international banking rules, the burden of proof lies with the seller.

IN WHICH SITUATIONS CAN YOU APPLY?

* The ordered product is never sent.

* The product turns out to be different from what was advertised, defective, or fake.

* The service (hotel reservation, flight ticket, etc.) is not provided.

* Duplicate charges are made to your card without your knowledge.

HERE IS THE STEP-BY-STEP PROCESS TO GET YOUR MONEY BACK

1. Contact Your Bank: Call the customer service of the bank your card belongs to or visit a branch.

2. Use the Right Keyword: Instead of saying "I was scammed" during the call, use the technical term: "I want to initiate a transaction dispute (Chargeback)."

3. State Your Reason: Fill out your dispute form by stating "I did not receive the service/product" or "The product is not as described."

4. Review Process: Your bank requests proof of the transaction from the counterparty bank where the money was transferred. If the other party cannot provide a valid shipping receipt or proof that the product was delivered, the process concludes in favor of the consumer.

WHY IS IT FASTER THAN THE PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE?

While prosecutor and enforcement proceedings can take months or even years due to bureaucratic procedures, the Chargeback mechanism operates within the interbank system. Since most scammers cannot provide official proof to the bank, the money is withdrawn from the seller's account and refunded to the victim's card.

To file a transaction dispute, generally, 120 days* must not have passed since the transaction. Therefore, you should apply to the bank without wasting time as soon as the victimization is noticed.
