59 thousand non-conformities detected! Major collapse revealed following Zeren tragedy
Following the death of Zeren Ertaş in an elevator accident in Aydın, the conditions of student hostels and dormitories have become a subject of public debate. Inspections carried out by the Ministry of National Education's Department of Workplace Health and Safety Unit at school hostels have laid bare the danger.
According to the report by Mustafa Bildircin from BirGün, 2,785 out of 3,043 boarding schools affiliated with the MEB were inspected in 2022 regarding health and safety conditions. The inspection revealed the dangers awaiting students in boarding schools.

According to information in the MEB report, a total of 59 thousand 405 non-conformities were identified in school hostels as of the end of 2022. The distribution of the tens of thousands of non-conformities across the directorates to which the boarding schools are affiliated drew attention. Accordingly, the General Directorate of Religious Education ranked first with 18 thousand 406 non-conformities in its hostels. Following the General Directorate of Religious Education, the General Directorate of Vocational and Technical Education ranked second with 14 thousand 895 non-conformities, and the General Directorate of Secondary Education ranked third with 21 thousand 830 non-conformities. It was reported that 4 thousand 144 non-conformities were identified in hostels affiliated with the General Directorate of Basic Education, and 547 in those affiliated with the General Directorate of Special Education and Guidance.

Details of the non-conformities detected in school hostels were also shared in the report. While fire system management was the area with the most non-conformities, with a total of 5 thousand 933, other non-conformities were listed as follows:
