Faulty question crisis in YKS: ÖSYM decides to launch an investigation

In the Higher Education Institutions Examination (YKS), which was attended by approximately 2.5 million candidates, two questions have sparked public debate. Following objections regarding questions in the Turkish Language and Literature and the Field Proficiency Test (AYT) mathematics session, the Assessment, Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM) has initiated an investigation process.

Character name controversy in literature question

The first subject of the objections was a question regarding Halide Edib Adıvar's novel Handan in the Turkish Language and Literature test. Claims that the character's name was written as "Nermin" instead of "Neriman" were brought to the agenda on the grounds that it caused confusion among candidates.

Different views on mathematics question

Another question that sparked debate was the 23rd question of the AYT mathematics test. Different assessments were made regarding the correct answer to the question, which asked for the determination of the root interval of a function from a derivative graph.

Some mathematicians expressed the opinion that option A was correct instead of option C, which ÖSYM announced as the correct answer. This assessment brought with it discussions regarding the accuracy of the question.

ÖSYM has launched an investigation

Following the objections raised, ÖSYM has launched an investigation into the two questions in both the literature and mathematics tests.

Expert report expected

The decision on whether the questions will be canceled is expected to be made after an expert report, which is expected to be prepared next week. A final assessment regarding the questions in question will be made according to the result of the investigation.
