A significant milestone has been reached in the legislative proposal, which the AKP Parliamentary Group has been preparing for some time, that would provide an amnesty opportunity for higher education students. The proposal text is expected to be finalized following a briefing to be given to AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
In the contacts held between YÖK and the Interuniversity Council, the framework of the regulation and the views of the universities were discussed. It is stated that the assessments emerging from these meetings will also be conveyed to the President.
SCOPE AND CONDITIONS
According to information reported by the Türkiye newspaper, the amnesty regulation is not planned to cover a broad student population. The regulation is specifically aimed at benefiting undergraduate students. As a fundamental criterion, students will be required to prove the excuses they present for their applications with official documents.
WHICH STUDENTS ARE AT THE FOREFRONT?
In the draft study, it is on the agenda to include students who have fallen into serious financial hardship due to the loss of a mother or father, who have had to interrupt their education because they lost their family's sole source of income, or who have been unable to continue their studies because they have assumed caregiving responsibilities within their family. It is stated that those affected by disasters and students who have been unable to continue their education due to long-term health problems will also be able to benefit from the regulation, provided they can prove their compelling circumstances with official documents.
