Detained İBB Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu criticised the education system, saying "Turkey needs an education revolution." Stressing that state schools are losing their effectiveness, İmamoğlu drew attention to the exorbitant fees at private schools. İmamoğlu said: "We will put a stop to this course! When we come to power by the will of our nation, in the second century of the Republic, education will once again be scientific, democratic, equal, accessible, inclusive, innovative, contemporary, public, and free."

Ekrem İmamoğlu, the CHP's presidential candidate and İBB Mayor who has been held at Silivri Prison since 23 March, criticised the education system in his latest message, saying "Our country needs an education revolution."
The message, published on the X account named İmamoğlu'nun Cumhurbaşkanlığı Aday Ofisi, included the following statements:
"Our Chief Teacher Mustafa Kemal Atatürk knew it well: 'It is education that either keeps a nation alive as a free, independent, glorious, and elevated community, or abandons it to servitude and misery.' The development and progress of a nation is only possible through education.
Today we find ourselves at the same point; our country needs an education revolution.
In Turkey, there is no longer free and quality education; there is paid and low-quality education.
While state schools are rapidly losing their effectiveness, private schools that strain family budgets are increasingly on the rise.
Nurseries are expensive, and kindergartens have now become fee-paying due to the co-payment system.
In state schools, everything from stationery to clothing, from transportation to meals and drinking water, from supplementary books to the school's basic needs, is a financial burden on families.
University accommodation is inadequate, and it is impossible for students to get by on the support offered under the name of scholarships or loans.
All of this is the result of a mindset that sees education — which should be a public service — as a sector.
We will put a stop to this course! When we come to power by the will of our nation, in the second century of the Republic, education will once again be scientific, democratic, equal, accessible, inclusive, innovative, contemporary, public, and free.
We will make education completely free from pre-school to university.
We will eliminate all expenses in state schools for basic needs such as stationery, books, transportation, meals, and drinking water.
We will establish school budgets for the needs of our schools and our students.
We will increase the capacity of state dormitories and improve scholarship and loan opportunities.
And most importantly; no family will ever again be forced to send their child to a private school!
We will give our children and their families a free, high-quality, scientific, and contemporary education system!"
