'Nepotism' in universities

The preference process for the Higher Education Institutions Examination (YKS) has concluded. While hundreds of thousands of candidates await placement results, the information contained in the ÖSYM preference guide has drawn attention.

The newspaper Yeni Asya analyzed the state of academia based on this data. According to the report;

In state universities alone, there are nearly 1,500 departments without a single professor. These departments include midwifery, nursing, law, and many engineering programs. According to a report by Mustafa Kömüş from Birgün, based on information in the ÖSYM guide, students made preferences for over 6,000 departments across 129 state universities. Nearly one-fifth of these 6,000-plus departments have no professors. Data shows that exactly 1,453 departments have no professors at all, and 1,050 departments have no associate professors. As for foundation universities, it is unknown how many departments lack professors or associate professors because the data for many of them is insufficient.

ERDOĞAN UNIVERSITY IS ALSO ON THE LIST

Among these, law stands out as one of the most notable departments. Six law faculties do not have a single professor. These faculties include the Boğaziçi University Faculty of Law, which was opened despite all criticism and began accepting students last year, and which the AKP has essentially used for retribution. The other faculties are located at Afyon Kocatepe, Çankırı Karatekin, İnönü, İzmir Democracy, and Recep Tayyip Erdoğan universities. The situation is similar in engineering departments, whose quotas are also highly controversial. More than 100 engineering departments have no professors at all. In computer engineering, one of the most preferred engineering fields, there are no professors in 35 universities. Many of them also lack associate professors.

Another department that draws attention is health management. Out of 64 universities with health management programs, 24 have no professors. Social services are in an even worse state than health management. Half of the 62 total social services departments have no professors. Data for nursing and midwifery departments also stood out. There are no professors in 37 of the 120 nursing departments and 28 of the 49 midwifery departments. Faculties of education, whose quotas are constantly debated due to the issue of unappointed teachers, have also been affected by this situation. More than 200 teaching departments have no professors. Especially in social studies teaching and special education teaching departments, the number of professors is zero in many universities.
