Primary school starting age is changing
Work has begun to amend the regulation on the primary school starting age of 69 months, which was enacted during the tenure of Minister of National Education Yusuf Tekin as undersecretary. The new model plans to set the starting age at 72 months and allow for flexibility based on developmental status.

According to the regulation introduced during the tenure of Minister of National Education Yusuf Tekin as undersecretary, children who have completed 69 months by the end of September are currently eligible to start primary school. Upon the request of parents, this limit can be lowered to 66 months. On the other hand, some students start school at the age of 72 months and older. When the regulation first came into effect, the starting age was set at 60 months, but it was later revised following public backlash.
It is stated that this system, which was implemented during Tekin's time as undersecretary, will now be changed again.
According to information reported by the pro-government newspaper Sabah, the primary school starting age will be 72 months as a baseline in the new regulation. Furthermore, it is planned to provide flexibility between 69 months (72-3) and 75 months (72+3) based on the children's developmental characteristics.
