Protest at Erciyes University following murder: 'Rector resign' chants rise

Following a femicide at Erciyes University in Kayseri, students marched to the rectorate to protest security vulnerabilities. Hundreds of students gathered in front of the rectorate and chanted "Rector resign" during a speech by Rector Prof. Dr. Fatih Altun.

The students accused the administration of negligence, stating that security measures on campus have been inadequate for a long time and that outsiders can easily enter the university.

One student described the situation as follows:

“A tram passes through Erciyes University. People without student IDs can easily enter by telling security they are here for a ‘conference,’ the ‘hospital,’ or an ‘organization.’ Students have been complaining about the security problem for a very long time.”

In yesterday's incident, university student M.K. was shot and killed with a pump-action shotgun by her ex-husband, with whom she had been arguing in front of the faculty building. The moments the attacker fled the scene by vehicle were captured on a mobile phone camera. M.K. was taken to the Erciyes University Faculty of Medicine Hospital after initial intervention by medical teams but could not be saved.

Following the murder, students marched to the rectorate, saying "Enough is enough" in response to the growing reactions on campus. The students protested both the femicide and the university administration's negligence regarding security.
