Türk Eğitim-Sen General President Talip Geylan criticized the decision to appoint 20,000 teachers, announced by Minister of National Education Yusuf Tekin, in a written statement shared on his social media account.

President Geylan said that Minister Tekin has caused 'a huge disappointment for hundreds of thousands of teacher candidates and their families.'

"A HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT"

Geylan's statement is as follows:

“The number of paid teachers in 79 provinces is 72,723

The staffing requirement in 79 provinces is 101,350

The number of teachers who retired or left the Ministry of National Education in 2023 is 23,670

The number of teachers who will retire in 2024 will be at least 20,000.

But the number of teachers who will start their duties in the 2024-2025 academic year, after a 9-month wait, will be only 20,000. Hundreds of thousands of teacher candidates and their families have been subjected to a huge disappointment. Furthermore, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's promise that 'interviews will be abolished' has also been disregarded. Minister of National Education Yusuf Tekin stated that appointments will be made with 50 percent KPSS and 50 percent interview scores. The interview practice, which 20,000 teacher candidates will enter by giving a 45-minute lecture, is a situation that is practically impossible to carry out soundly. Even if it were, it is not possible to ensure absolute justice in any interview.

"INSISTING ON INTERVIEWS IS A VIOLATION OF RIGHTS..."

We always say; it is not an artificial intelligence application that will conduct the interview. Where the human element is involved, a completely objective evaluation will not be possible. The knowledge, emotional state, mood of the day, and perception capacity of the interview commission member are the fundamental factors that influence their judgment. In this respect, if you were to interview the same candidate in two different commissions, the scores given would not be the same. Under these circumstances, insisting on interviews means creating the ground for the violation of rights and bearing the burden of thousands of candidates. This burden is on the shoulders of all decision-makers who insist on the interview practice. I am calling on our President, Mr. Erdoğan, once again. Do not allow the state's word to be disregarded, and give the instruction to abolish interviews in teacher appointments in line with your promise.”
