Snow and cold weather hit education: Schools closed in 6 provinces

Education has been suspended due to heavy snowfall in Gümüşhane, Bayburt, and Erzincan, as well as in the Erzurum districts of Aziziye, Palandöken, Yakutiye, Aşkale, Tekman, Karayazı, and Hınıs; the Tunceli districts of Ovacık, Nazımiye, and Pülümür; and the Karlıova district of Bingöl.

The new cold wave, which has increased its impact across Turkey, has brought snowfall to many cities. While daily life has been negatively affected in cities blanketed in white, education has been temporarily suspended in some provinces and districts due to heavy snow. Schools have been closed for one day across Gümüşhane and in 7 districts of Erzurum.

Erzurum Governor Aydın Baruş stated in a post on his social media account that the snowfall continues to affect the city. Baruş included the following statements in his announcement:

"On Thursday, education has been suspended for 1 day in public and private kindergartens, primary schools, middle schools, and high schools in our Aziziye, Palandöken, and Yakutiye districts. On the same date, our pregnant and disabled public personnel will also be considered on administrative leave for 1 day. Decisions regarding our other districts will be made by our district governorships. I wish our teachers and students a good holiday."

In updates provided in the following hours, it was announced that education was suspended for one day in all schools in the Aşkale, Tekman, Karayazı, and Hınıs districts, and only for bussed education in the Horasan district.

GÜMÜŞHANE

The Gümüşhane Governor's Office announced that the snowfall affecting the entire province would continue intermittently and that the drop in air temperatures would increase the risk of icing in the morning hours. It was reported that education has been suspended for one day across the city as a precautionary measure against potential negative outcomes.

TUNCELİ

In a statement made by the Tunceli Governor's Office, it was announced that due to snowfall, education has been suspended for one day in all schools in the Ovacık, Nazımiye, and Pülümür districts, and for bussed education in the Hozat district.

Furthermore, it was stated that pregnant and disabled personnel working in public institutions, as well as female employees with children attending kindergarten or daycare, would be considered on administrative leave.

ERZİNCAN

The Erzincan Governor's Office also announced that education has been suspended for one day across the province, citing adverse weather conditions. The statement said, "Education has been suspended for 1 day on Thursday, February 26, in all formal and non-formal education institutions affiliated with the Ministry of National Education, Quran courses, and daycares, day care centers, and children's clubs affiliated with public institutions and organizations throughout our province."

BİNGÖL

Education has been suspended for one day in the Karlıova district of Bingöl due to heavy snowfall and adverse weather conditions. The decision was announced to the public by the Karlıova District Governorship via social media.

BAYBURT

Schools have also been closed across Bayburt due to snowfall. In a statement from the Governor's Office, it was noted that the ongoing heavy precipitation could lead to icing and cause disruptions in transportation. In this context, it was reported that education has been suspended for one day in all public and private educational institutions, as well as courses, daycares, and rehabilitation centers.
