Exercising is very important for a healthy life. However, exercising with incorrect methods can lead to injuries. Whether you are a professional athlete or exercising as a hobby, necessary precautions must be taken and certain rules must be followed to avoid sports injuries.
Thanks to the precautions taken and rules followed, you can protect your health while exercising and reduce your risk of injury. The path to healthy exercise begins with listening to your body, using the right techniques, and taking the necessary precautions. The goal when exercising is not just to gain physical health, but also to protect your overall health in the long term.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Murat Köken from the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology at Memorial Health Group Medstar Antalya Hospital explained the tips for exercising without putting your health at risk.
1. USE THE RIGHT EQUIPMENT
Using appropriate equipment for every sport is the simplest yet most effective way to protect yourself from injuries. From shoes to knee pads, choosing the right equipment reduces the load on your joints and muscles. Proper footwear is vital, especially for sports like running and basketball. By using shoes that support your foot health, you can increase your performance while preventing injuries.
2. DO REGULAR WARM-UP AND COOL-DOWN EXERCISES
Warm-up movements prepare your muscles and joints before exercise. Starting to exercise without warming up can lead to muscle tears and joint strains. Similarly, the cool-down exercises you do after sports reduce tension in your muscles and prepare your body for the recovery process. Warming up and cooling down are essential parts of exercise.
3. CONTINUE IN A CONTROLLED MANNER WITHOUT PUSHING YOURSELF
Suddenly pushing your body while exercising is one of the most common mistakes. Especially for beginners or those who have taken a long break, starting slowly and in a controlled manner minimizes the risk of injury. Be patient to achieve success in sports; get to know your body and know your limits.
4. DO STRENGTHENING EXERCISES REGULARLY
The stronger your muscles are, the better your joints are supported. Exercises that strengthen muscles are one of the most effective ways to prevent joint injuries. Strengthening the muscles in the leg and lower back regions, in particular, reduces back and knee injuries. Make sure to add strengthening exercises to your weekly sports routine.
5. DO STRETCHING AND FLEXIBILITY WORKOUTS
Stretching before and after sports prevents injuries by increasing joint flexibility. Flexible muscles and joints are more resilient during sudden movements and lower the risk of injury. Activities like yoga and pilates are great options for increasing flexibility and protecting joint health.
6. EAT A BALANCED DIET AND PAY ATTENTION TO WATER CONSUMPTION
Muscle and joint health are directly related to proper nutrition and adequate fluid intake. Consuming foods rich in Vitamin D, calcium, and Omega-3 strengthens your joints and bones. Also, do not neglect to drink plenty of water to replace the fluids you lose during exercise. Water consumption increases the contraction ability of muscles and supports your sports performance.
7. LISTEN TO YOUR BODY
Pain is a warning signal your body gives you. Ignoring pain and continuing to exercise can lead to serious injuries. If you feel pain or discomfort in any area while exercising, rest immediately and consult a specialist if necessary. Exercise should be done for a healthy life; enjoy sports by listening to your body.
