Prof. Dr. Övgün Ahmet Ercan, in a statement made via X, said that in the event of a possible magnitude 7.5 earthquake, a potential tsunami in the Marmara region would hit the coast within 4 to 20 minutes, while this duration would be 5 to 30 minutes in the Aegean and Mediterranean.
Ercan's post is as follows:
"Faults in the Marmara are strike-slip with a 1-1.5 m vertical component. A M7.5 earthquake produces a surge (tsunami) with 1 to 2.5 m waves, a run-up height of 5 m, and an inland reach of 50 to 300 m. It reaches the coasts within 4 to 20 minutes of the earthquake. Narrow-mouthed bays and inlets are hazardous.
In Turkey, a surge (tsunami) in the Aegean and Mediterranean, where there are normal faults, can reach wave heights of 1 to 3.5 m, a run-up height of 5.5 m, and an inland reach of 100 to 2500 m. The surge reaches the coasts within 5 to 30 minutes of the earthquake. Narrow-mouthed bays and inlets are hazardous."
