AKOM issues heavy rain warning for Istanbul: Temperatures to drop from mid-week

The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) Disaster Coordination Center (AKOM) has issued a warning for cool and rainy weather for Istanbul and the Marmara region. According to the weekly weather forecast report, the region is expected to come under the influence of a cool and rainy weather system arriving from the Balkans starting Wednesday.

In its assessment dated July 20, 2026, AKOM reported that temperatures, which have been hovering between 30-33 degrees throughout the week, will gradually decrease by 7-8 degrees and fall below seasonal norms. The statement indicated that local downpours and thunderstorms may occur during this period.

According to the report, the air temperature in Istanbul on Monday, July 20, is expected to be 25 degrees in the morning, 33 degrees at noon, 28 degrees in the evening, and 25 degrees at night. The wind is expected to blow from the northeast at moderate strength, occasionally reaching speeds of 10-30 km/h, while humidity is expected to range between 40 and 80 percent. The sea water temperature was measured at 24 degrees.

WHAT WILL THE WEATHER BE LIKE THROUGHOUT THE WEEK?

According to AKOM's weekly forecast, partly cloudy and clear weather is expected in Istanbul on Tuesday. There is no forecast for precipitation on Tuesday, when the highest temperature is expected to reach 34 degrees.

On Wednesday, thunderstorms are expected to begin. On that day, when the temperature is expected to drop to 32 degrees, 2-7 kilograms of precipitation per square meter is forecast. On Thursday and Friday, the showers are expected to continue, with the highest temperature remaining around 26 degrees and precipitation amounts expected to be in the 3-7 kilogram range.

It is estimated that the intensity of the precipitation will increase on Saturday. It was reported that with the thunderstorms, the temperature could drop to 25 degrees, and 10-20 kilograms of precipitation per square meter could fall. On Sunday, partly cloudy and intermittent rainy weather is expected to be effective, with the highest temperature expected to rise to 28 degrees.
