Back-to-back earthquakes in Gümüşhane! 17 earthquakes recorded

A series of earthquakes occurring in the middle of the night in Gümüşhane has caused concern among citizens. According to AFAD data, exactly 17 earthquakes have been recorded.

According to AFAD data, the earthquakes, with their epicenter in the Kelkit district, began at 22:05. While 17 earthquakes of low magnitude have been recorded since that time, a 4.3-magnitude earthquake was felt throughout the entire province.

The earthquake, which had its epicenter in the Yeşilyurt and Çimenli villages of the district, occurred around 01:15. The earthquake, which took place at a depth of 15 kilometers, caused many citizens to wake up from their sleep despite its short duration.

The brief tremor was felt in many high-rise buildings in the city center, particularly in apartment buildings along the Harşit Stream. Footage showed students staying in dormitories in the university area panicking and heading out into the gardens.

While the earthquakes that caused short-term panic among citizens continued at low magnitudes, it was learned that there was no loss of life or property throughout the province due to the earthquakes.

STATEMENT FROM THE GOVERNOR

Governor Alper Tanrısever stated the following in a post on his social media account following the earthquake:

“A 4.3-magnitude earthquake centered in Kelkit, Gümüşhane, has occurred. There are no negative situations encountered in the initial assessment. Our field scanning efforts are ongoing. Get well soon to all of us. May God protect us from worse.”
