The Deposit-Bearing Packaging (DOA) System began to be implemented across Türkiye as of July 1, 2026. Under the scheme coordinated by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, deposit-bearing beverage packages can be returned in 81 provinces and 973 districts.
Citizens will be able to hand in eligible plastic, glass and aluminum beverage packages bearing the DOA logo at return machines or return centers and receive an incentive payment of 1 TL per package. Payments will be transferred to users’ DOA digital wallets.
With the system introduced as part of the Zero Waste Movement, the aim is to bring approximately 25 billion beverage packages into the recycling chain each year. In addition to its environmental contribution, the scheme is intended to provide an economic benefit of about 30 billion liras annually.
HOW WILL RETURN POINTS BE FOUND?
In the DOA system, returns can be made through DOA Return Machines and DOA Return Centers. Chain markets, supermarkets, grocery stores, kiosks, as well as HORECA businesses covering hotels, restaurants and cafes, will also serve as return points.
Those who want to find the nearest return point will be able to use the “Find a Return Point” section in the DOA mobile app or the “Where Do I Return It?” page on the DOA website. By selecting province, district and neighborhood information, the nearest return point can be displayed.
Under the system, a user will be able to return a maximum of 200 packages in a day. The package to be returned must be empty, unbroken, uncrushed and intact. It is also required to bear the DOA mark.
Only single-use PET, glass and aluminum beverage packages between 0.10 liters and 3.01 liters have been included in the system. Products that do not carry the DOA logo, milk and dairy product packages, and cardboard- and paper-based packages cannot be returned.
HOW DOES THE SYSTEM WORK?
To benefit from the deposit return system, users must register in the system through the DOA mobile app or website. If a return machine is to be used, the machine’s screen is touched first, then the “Return” option in the mobile app is opened.
After the QR code on the machine is scanned with a mobile phone, the deposit-bearing packages are placed one by one into the machine’s feeding section. When the transaction is completed, the incentive amount is instantly reflected in the user’s DOA digital wallet. A similar transaction can also be carried out at DOA Return Centers by scanning the QR code on the staff member’s device.
Users will be able to monitor their wallet balances and monthly environmental gains through the app. Accumulated amounts can be transferred to bank accounts, withdrawn in cash from ATMs or used for purchases at contracted markets.
During the pilot implementation period, 25 kuruş was paid per package; with the start of nationwide implementation, this amount was increased to 1 TL as of July 1, 2026.
