Earth wasn't enough, now we've started turning Mars into a junkyard
The latest image from NASA's Mars helicopter reveals how we are already threatening the Red Planet.

NASA’s Ingenuity helicopter, which has been flying and exploring on Mars, caused something that many people described as “extraterrestrial debris” to come to the agenda last year. Images sent to Earth over time occasionally surface on the internet, reminding us of a reality. In fact, these images serve as a window showing how humanity, during its efforts to explore the universe, is turning not just our Earth, but other planets and the universe itself into a junkyard.
Of course, at least for now, it is not possible to send a multi-billion dollar spacecraft to another planet without leaving some trash behind. The photos circulating on the internet show a collection of debris on the Martian surface. Although it is tempting to fall for explanations about an alien race, this debris actually consists only of parts from the landing craft that brought the Ingenuity helicopter to the Red Planet.
However, there are some positive aspects to these images. For example, examining the NASA Mars debris left behind by Ingenuity’s landing equipment could help scientists find better ways to land spacecraft on other planets. Furthermore, this debris also draws attention to the excessive cost of human space exploration. Despite all our efforts, when we go to another planet, we leave behind a multi-billion dollar pile of trash.
From the cost of the materials needed to build these spacecraft to the cost of the fuel that powers them, the cost of space travel was already very high. But when you consider how much debris our space missions create on these planets, it is obvious that we must look for better ways to deal with the trash these missions leave behind.
Fortunately, significant progress has been made in this regard. Of course, NASA’s Mars debris shows how much trash we have left on Mars, but the development of reusable rockets has helped reduce the amount of waste we create with each mission exponentially. The only thing we need to do from now on is to find a way to land on Mars without leaving a large amount of debris behind.
Unfortunately, that is not so easy. Last year, Perseverance detected more human trash on the Red Planet, which encouraged similar discussions regarding the better management of space exploration. For now, these images will continue to serve as a reminder of the cost of human exploration and the daunting moments that come with exploring a new planet and sending a spacecraft to its surface.
