Extreme heat evaporates dams: Occupancy rates of dams in Istanbul have fallen

Due to increased evaporation caused by extreme heat, water levels in the dams have begun to decrease.

In addition to the hot weather, the lack of rainfall has also negatively affected the dams.

Measurements taken by İSKİ show that the occupancy rate in Istanbul's dams has been recorded at 54.52 percent.

WATER LEVEL IN ALİBEYKÖY DAM DROPPED TO 21.79 PERCENT

The Alibeyköy Dam, one of the important dams supplying water to Istanbul, has also been affected by the drought. The occupancy rate at the Alibeyköy Dam, which fills up to 80 percent during the winter months, has fallen to 21.79 percent as of today. Areas in the dam reservoir that were previously filled with water have completely dried up. It is now possible to easily drive vehicles over the hardened soil. However, the occupancy rate in the dam reservoir is still seen as higher compared to a year ago. A year ago, the occupancy rate in the dam had fallen to 12.01 percent.

TRASH HAS EMERGED

On the other hand, it was observed that the ground exposed by the receding water in the dam reservoir basin is filled with trash. All kinds of waste, from car tires to plastic bottles, bags, and construction debris, have come to light as the water has receded. According to İSKİ data, the dam with the lowest water level is the Alibeyköy Dam at 21.79 percent. The occupancy rate at the Kazandere Dam, located in the north of Istanbul, has also fallen to 23.17 percent. The fullest dam in Istanbul was recorded as the Terkos Dam reservoir with an occupancy rate of 68.38 percent.
