According to a statement from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the temperature measured at 49.9 degrees yesterday in two districts of the capital, New Delhi, was recorded as the "highest temperature" ever measured in the city.
The statement reported that temperatures exceeded 49 degrees in some other cities in the country, while the temperature reached 50.5 degrees in the Churu region of Rajasthan state.
It was stated that the effects of the extreme heat felt in the country's northwestern and central states are expected to gradually decrease after May 30.
On May 21, the IMD announced that a 5-day "red alert" had been issued due to the "severe heat wave" affecting New Delhi and its surrounding areas.
