Dr. İlker Eroğlu, a faculty member in the Department of Geography at Tekirdağ Namık Kemal University, stated that it is possible for Turkey to share the same climate characteristics as Egypt in the near future, emphasizing the importance of efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change.
In his statement, Eroğlu noted that climate change negatively affects all living things worldwide. Emphasizing that global warming will affect everyone across the globe and that this issue must be taken seriously, Eroğlu pointed out that the subtropical zone is expanding northward due to climate change.
Pointing out that the hot zone is spreading northward, Eroğlu stated that Turkey could have the same climate characteristics as Egypt in the near future. He reported that invasive fish are moving northward due to the warming of the seas, and that this situation is causing a decline in biological diversity.
3 THOUSAND ENDEMIC PLANTS WILL BE AFFECTED
Stating that 3 thousand endemic plants in Turkey could also be affected by global warming, Eroğlu said that efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change must be increased. In this context, he expressed that policies must be developed to cope with effects such as rising temperatures, decreasing precipitation, and drought. He emphasized that future projections must be presented and water resources must be used sparingly. He noted that Turkey is already a water-stressed country and that it is important not to waste water.
