Istanbul's dams are sounding the alarm: Only 85 days of water left!

Following a dry and rainless summer season, Istanbul's dams have begun to sound the alarm. As the occupancy rate in the dams has dropped to 30.18 percent, experts have stated that there is only 85 days' worth of water remaining.

The occupancy rate in the 10 dams that supply Istanbul's water has fallen to 30.18 percent due to drought and a rainless summer.

Due to a lack of sufficient rainfall, the occupancy rates in the Alibeyköy, Kazandere, and Papuçdere dams have dropped below 10 percent.

"WE HAVE 85 DAYS OF WATER LEFT"

Speaking about the occupancy rates of the dams in Istanbul, Prof. Dr. Lokman Hakan Tecer from Tekirdağ Namık Kemal University said, "When we make a calculation today based on the current occupancy level of the dams, there is currently 264 million cubic meters of water in the dams. When we calculate the daily consumption, it means we have 85 days of water left, which really means it is sounding an alarm."

"ODORS HAVE BEGUN TO EMERGE FROM THREE DAMS"

In a post on the subject from the social media account of Hava Forum, the following statements were used: "We must do something. It won't work by not caring... Istanbul has 85 days of water left. Alibey is at 6 percent, Pabuçdere at 7 percent, and Kazandere at 8 percent. Odors have begun to emerge from these three dams. Ömerli is trying to hold out at 26 percent. We are facing a severe drought."


WE RECEIVED THE LEAST RAINFALL IN THE LAST 10 YEARS

According to İSKİ data, the amount of rainfall received by the dams this year has also remained well behind previous years. While 852 kilograms of rain per square meter fell on Istanbul's dams in 2023, only 480 kilograms of rain per square meter has fallen this year. It was stated that this figure is the lowest rainfall amount in the last 10 years. In 2021, 901.3 kilograms of rain per square meter had fallen on Istanbul's dams.
