Istanbul's district with the most polluted air has been identified
Measurements taken in January 2026 showed a significant decrease in air pollution across Istanbul, although some districts continue to approach threshold values.

Updated data on air quality in Istanbul has revealed a positive picture across the city. According to the analyses, air pollution in January 2026 decreased by 36 percent compared to the same period last year. The primary reason for this improvement was cited as the more frequent rainfall and strong wind movements seen in the city this year.
The amount of pollution in the air became clear with the evaluation of particulate matter (PM10) measurements obtained from 24 different stations affiliated with the Ministry of Environment and the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. The particle level, which was an average of 41.5 micrograms per cubic meter last year, fell to 26.5 micrograms by the end of January 2026. While an increase in air quality was detected at 21 of the measurement stations, an increase in pollution was recorded at only 2 points.
THE MOST POLLUTED AIR IS IN KAĞITHANE
When examined on a district basis, the results are striking. January data revealed that the values measured at the Kağıthane 1 station indicate the highest air pollution in Istanbul. Kağıthane was followed by Tuzla and Sancaktepe, respectively. In contrast, the Sultangazi 1 station stood out as the cleanest point in the city; air pollution here decreased by 83 percent compared to last year. Additionally, Büyükada and Sarıyer were among the regions with the cleanest air.
The stations with the highest air pollution were listed as follows: Kağıthane, Tuzla, Sancaktepe, Aksaray, Yenibosna, and Sultangazi. Conversely, Sultangazi, Büyükada, Sarıyer, Kumköy, Maslak, and Kandilli were identified as regions with clean air that stand out in terms of air quality.
TRAFFIC-RELATED POLLUTION REMAINS A PROBLEM
Experts point to the heavy traffic load created by motor vehicles as the source of air pollution in Istanbul. While it is estimated that there are approximately 6 million vehicles in the city, it is stated that the stop-and-go movements frequently experienced in traffic cause particles resulting from exhaust gases, as well as brake pads and tire wear, to mix into the atmosphere.
Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Toros commented, "Although there has been no significant decrease in industrial production or the number of vehicles, the 36 percent drop in air pollution recorded this year occurred largely due to meteorological conditions, specifically the effect of rainfall and wind."
Toros also warned that fossil fuel consumption must be reduced and public transport opportunities must be expanded to protect air quality in a sustainable manner. Experts recommend promoting eco-friendly policies and alternatives in transportation as a long-term solution for clean air.
