Naci Görür draws attention to the epicenter following the earthquake in Gümüşhane

A 4.2-magnitude earthquake occurred in Gümüşhane today. Geologist and Seismologist Prof. Dr. Naci Görür drew attention to the location of the earthquake and called it 'significant'.

A 4.2-magnitude earthquake occurred at 06:09 this morning with its epicenter in the Kelkit district of Gümüşhane. According to initial assessments, the earthquake, which occurred at a depth of 5.09 kilometers, did not cause any damage. 

NACİ GÖRÜR MAKES ASSESSMENT AFTER THE EARTHQUAKE

Geologist and Seismologist Prof. Dr. Naci Görür, who evaluated the earthquake in Gümüşhane, shared a post on his social media account. Pointing out that the earthquake occurred on a fault connected to the Erzincan segment of the North Anatolian Fault line, Görür warned: 'Friends, a shallow 4.1 earthquake occurred in Eskiyol, on a short fault connected to the Erzincan segment of the NAF. Its location is significant. Get well soon. With love.'

WHAT AREAS DOES THE NORTH ANATOLIAN FAULT COVER?

The North Anatolian Fault (NAF), one of the fastest-moving and most active right-lateral strike-slip faults in the world, is an active fault line 1100 km in length. It cuts across the entire North Anatolia region, approximately from Lake Van to the Gulf of Saros. It is known that fragmented-crushed rocks, cold and hot water springs, small lakes, travertine formations, and young volcanic cones are found along the fault line.
