The Kaz Mountains are on the agenda with a new energy project. İnovatif Enerji plans to build a wind power plant with storage in the Bayramiç district of Çanakkale. Under the project, for which the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change has issued a "positive environmental impact assessment (EIA)" decision, 14 turbines will be installed in the region.
According to the report in Cumhuriyet, although the project is being carried out under the name of "clean energy," it is being criticized for its environmental impact. It is stated that a total of 3,066 trees will be cut down in the areas where the turbines will be installed and to open access roads. It was announced that the cost of the project will be 2 billion 170 million TL.
The biological diversity in the region is also noteworthy. The EIA report states that there are 270 species belonging to 49 families in the region, five of which are endemic. This situation increases concerns about the environmental impact of the project. İnovatif Enerji, on the other hand, argues that there are no endemic species in the region.
Environmental destruction has occurred in the Kaz Mountains before due to similar projects. With the new project, concerns are being raised that the natural structure of the region could suffer further damage.
