Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Murat Kurum announced that 205 million 709 thousand 303 beverage packages were collected in the Deposit-Based Packaging (DOA) system between July 1 and September 5.
In a post on his social media account, Kurum drew attention to the system's contribution to the environment and the economy, stating, “We are not throwing them away. We are collecting, recycling, and contributing to both the environment and the economy. We have collected 200 million packages with DOA and brought them into recycling. Just like Zero Waste, the awareness of DOA will continue to grow in waves.”
According to the data shared by the Ministry, the number of registered users in the system, which began its national integration process on July 1, has reached 3 million 214 thousand 992. The collected packages included PET, aluminum, and glass beverage containers with the DOA logo.
The province with the highest number of collected packages was Antalya, with 46 million 678 thousand 972 units. Antalya was followed by Istanbul with 38 million 675 thousand 928 packages, Izmir with 24 million 339 thousand 288 packages, Adana with 18 million 723 thousand 778 packages, and Ankara with 16 million 712 thousand 516 packages.
In the practice carried out by the Turkish Environment Agency under the coordination of the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, beverage packages are left in DOA machines instead of being thrown in the trash. While citizens are paid an incentive fee of 1 lira per package, the system aims to both ensure the recovery of raw materials and prevent plastics from mixing into nature.
The DOA system aims to collect 25 billion packages annually and provide a 30 billion lira contribution to the Turkish economy.
