Snow warning for Istanbul from meteorology expert

Meteorology expert Prof. Dr. Orhan Şen stated in a post on his social media account that snowfall in Istanbul will continue today and will intensify at times.

Following warnings from the General Directorate of Meteorology, snowfall has begun to take effect in the higher parts of Istanbul. In some areas, streets and avenues have turned white.

METEOROLOGY EXPERT WARNS: SNOWFALL WILL INTENSIFY

Meteorology expert Prof. Dr. Orhan Şen reported that snowfall in Istanbul may intensify at times today.

In a statement on his social media account, Şen said, "There is sleet and snow in the higher parts of Istanbul today. The wind from the north will reach storm speeds."

Şen continued as follows:

"Due to the sea effect, snowfall may intensify at times, especially in the northern parts. The temperature is 4 C. If you do not have winter tires, do not go out with your vehicle. The snow will continue tonight, with sleet in the city center."


WARNING FROM METEOROLOGY

On the other hand, the General Directorate of Meteorology stated, "Precipitation expected as sleet in the north of Marmara and snow in the higher parts; is expected to be strong at times in the surroundings of Istanbul, especially in the northern parts, as well as in Kırklareli, the east of Tekirdağ, and the north of Kocaeli, so it is necessary to be careful and cautious against potential negative conditions (disruptions in transportation, icing, and frost, etc.)."

The statement included the following:

"Since the wind is expected to blow as a strong and short-term storm (50 to 70 km/h) in Marmara and the Coastal Aegean, it is necessary to be careful and cautious against potential negative conditions."
