Storm and downpour paralyze life in Antalya: Roads turn into lakes, vehicles drive on sidewalks

In Antalya, where a yellow alert was issued, heavy rainfall that persisted throughout the night left the city virtually underwater. As manholes overflowed, streets and avenues turned into lakes, leaving numerous vehicles stranded. Some drivers were forced to drive on sidewalks to make progress.

In Antalya, where the 4th Regional Directorate of Meteorology had issued a warning for heavy rain and storms, the rainfall that began during the night continued until the first light of morning. Water accumulated on main arteries in the city center, and roads became impassable as manholes overflowed.

While drivers experienced difficult moments in traffic, some citizens took shelter at bus stops to protect themselves from the rain.

The intensity of the precipitation also affected daily life. A citizen who wanted to go to a nearby market was seen doing their shopping with a plastic bag over their head.

VEHICLES HEADED FOR THE SIDEWALK

In the Konyaaltı and Muratpaşa districts, many vehicles became stranded on water-filled roads. On some sections of Atatürk Boulevard, one of the city's busiest points, drivers who saw vehicles stuck on the road chose to drive on the sidewalk to continue their journey.

Authorities reported that the rainfall is expected to continue intermittently until noon on Sunday, January 25.
