Turkey experiences its warmest January in 53 years: -31.3 degrees in Ardahan, 29.3 degrees in Akçakoca

According to data from the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change's General Directorate of Meteorology, average temperatures in January 2024 were around seasonal norms in the vicinities of Kırklareli, Bilecik, Tekirdağ Malkara, Sakarya Geyve, Manisa Akhisar, Balıkesir Dursunbey, Kütahya Simav, Antalya Gazipaşa, Yozgat, Zonguldak, Kastamonu İnebolu, Trabzon, Rize, Hopa, Artvin, Bolu, Karabük, Merzifon, Amasya, Sinop Boyabat, Çorum Osmancık, and Giresun Şebinkarahisar, while they were measured above seasonal norms in other regions of the country.

The average temperature for January in Turkey, which was measured at 2.9 degrees between 1991 and 2020, was 5.7 degrees last month, 2.8 degrees above the norm.

In temperature analyses, based on comparisons made since 1971, January 2024 was recorded as the warmest January of the last 53 years.

Last month, the lowest temperature was recorded at minus 31.3 degrees in Ardahan, and the highest temperature was recorded at 29.3 degrees in Akçakoca.

TEMPERATURES BY REGION

In the Marmara Region, average temperatures were around seasonal norms in the vicinities of Kırklareli, Bilecik, Malkara, and Geyve, while they were observed above seasonal norms in other parts of the region. While the region's long-term average temperature for January is 5.2 degrees, it was measured at 7.4 degrees last month. The lowest temperature in the region was observed at minus 7.1 degrees in Bilecik, and the highest temperature was observed at 22.8 degrees in Lüleburgaz.

In the Aegean Region, average temperatures were determined to be around seasonal norms in the vicinities of Akhisar, Dursunbey, and Simav, and above seasonal norms in other parts of the region. Compared to the region's long-term average temperature of 6.3 degrees, it was recorded at 8.5 degrees last month. The lowest temperature in the region was measured at minus 9.4 degrees in Afyonkarahisar Emirdağ, and the highest temperature was measured at 23.8 degrees in Manisa Salihli.

In the Mediterranean Region, average temperatures were around seasonal norms in the vicinity of Gazipaşa and above seasonal norms in other parts of the region. While the region's long-term average temperature is 7.5 degrees, it was measured at 10.3 degrees last month. The lowest temperature in the region was recorded at minus 12.2 degrees in Kahramanmaraş Göksun, and the highest temperature was recorded at 25.6 degrees in Mersin Erdemli.

In the Central Anatolia Region, average temperatures were seen around seasonal norms in the vicinity of Yozgat and above seasonal norms in other parts of the region. The region's long-term average temperature for January, which is minus 0.6 degrees, was recorded at 2.9 degrees last month. The lowest temperature in the region was seen at minus 14.4 degrees in Kangal, and the highest temperature was seen at 16.1 degrees in Çumra.

In the Black Sea Region, average temperatures were around seasonal norms in the vicinities of Zonguldak, İnebolu, Trabzon, Rize, Hopa, Artvin, Bolu, Karabük, Merzifon, Amasya, Boyabat, Osmancık, and Şebinkarahisar, and above seasonal norms in other parts of the region. The region's long-term average temperature, measured at 3 degrees, was 5.3 degrees in January. The lowest temperature in the region was determined at minus 15.7 degrees in Bayburt, and the highest temperature was determined at 29.3 degrees in Akçakoca.

In the Eastern Anatolia Region, average temperatures were measured above seasonal norms across the region. While the region's long-term average temperature for January is minus 4.3 degrees, it was determined to be minus 0.2 degrees last month. The lowest temperature in the region was recorded at minus 31.3 degrees in Ardahan, and the highest temperature was recorded at 13 degrees in Iğdır.

In the Southeastern Anatolia Region, average temperatures were above seasonal norms across the region. The region's long-term average temperature of 4.6 degrees was recorded at 7.1 degrees in January. The lowest temperature in the region was determined at minus 4.4 degrees in Diyarbakır, and the highest temperature was determined at 18.8 degrees in Ceylanpınar.
