Worrying sight in Istanbul: Sea water recedes 100 meters! Expert provides explanation

In Istanbul's Silivri district, sea water has receded by approximately 100 meters. While the resulting sight caused concern, Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Toros, a faculty member at the ITU Department of Climate Science and Meteorological Engineering, stated, "This is a natural process that occurs frequently when the wind blows for a long time. There is nothing to fear. This is not a tide; it is the effect of the wind."

On the Silivri coast, sea water has receded approximately 100 meters from the shore. With the water receding, it was observed that small sandy islands formed on the beach.

Speaking to an AA reporter regarding the images that caused anxiety among local residents, Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Toros, a faculty member at the Istanbul Technical University (ITU) Department of Climate Science and Meteorological Engineering, said that the northeasterly wind (poyraz) has been effective in the region.

Prof. Dr. Toros stated, "Winds can affect the water level on the coasts. Strong and long-lasting winds lower the water level by pushing the water toward the open sea. On the other side, they can cause the sea level to rise by pushing the water toward the shore. Northerly winds are taking the water in Silivri and moving it toward the Bandırma side. Most likely, there has been a rise in water on the Bandırma side."

Noting that those living on the coast, such as in Silivri and Bandırma, may encounter this event frequently, Toros said, "This is a natural process that occurs frequently when the wind blows for a long time. There is nothing to fear. This is not a tide; it is the effect of the wind."

Toros added that the wind is expected to continue its effect in the region until Wednesday.
