Experts speaking to the New York Times (NYT), one of the United States' well-known newspapers, shared their advice for individuals who have hit a roadblock in their lives and want to regain momentum.
The experts interviewed by the NYT state that people often get stuck at some point in their lives due to reasons such as bad relationships, an inability to save money, and failure in creative endeavors.
According to the report by Independent Türkçe, the experts share the following advice to overcome these obstacles and get back on track:
1 - Identify the problem
Adam Alter, who teaches marketing and business at New York University after completing his PhD in psychology at Princeton University, states that the first step is problem identification.
The academic says that those who encounter an obstacle should identify the elements that put them in a difficult situation, complicate their lives, and create stress in their lives.
2 - Reevaluate negative thoughts
Judy Ho from Pepperdine University states that persistent negative thoughts can be draining and warns that they may prevent you from reaching your goals.
Ho suggests that to transform negative internal monologues, one can adopt a positive approach by saying "I will do my best, and if I struggle, I will ask for help" instead of "I will fail at this project."
The clinical psychologist also emphasizes that thoughts should be evaluated objectively.
3 - Take a step forward
"Imagine a future where you have overcome your obstacles," says Sarah Sarkis, a clinical psychologist from Boston.
Sarkis, who recommends taking small steps every day to help you move toward this vision, points to the importance of being disciplined and consistent.
4 - Share your goals
Adam Cheyer, one of the co-creators of Apple's personal assistant Siri, draws attention to the importance of sharing goals with others.
The researcher, who works on artificial intelligence experience at Airbnb, says, "If you share your goals, others can help you," and adds:
"In some way, the universe will ensure you reach that goal. This has been a great tool for me."
5 - Do something meaningful
Emphasizing the importance of dedicating time to activities that align with one's own values, Alter says the following:
"When you feel stuck in areas of your life that you have no interest in, this method can move you forward."
