Another medical miracle from artificial intelligence: It determines it twice as accurately

Scientists from Imperial College London in the UK, the Technical University of Munich in Germany, and the University of Edinburgh in Scotland developed the new artificial intelligence software using brain scans of 800 patients whose time of stroke was known.

Researchers, who also tested the artificial intelligence model they developed on data taken from approximately 2 thousand patients, determined that this software provided results twice as accurate in identifying the time of the stroke compared to the use of standard visual methods.

The researchers found that the software is capable of estimating the time of the stroke by analyzing the identified lesions, in addition to automatically extracting the relevant area in the brain scan.

The researchers stated that the fact that scans performed using the new artificial intelligence software include additional features such as tissue and take into account variations in lesions was effective in obtaining better results compared to previously used scanning methods.

Dr. Paul Bentley, one of the authors of the study, stated that in most strokes caused by blood clots, the patient is eligible for both medical and surgical treatment within 4.5 hours after the stroke occurs.

Bentley noted that standard treatments only work in the very early stages after a stroke and can otherwise cause secondary damage.

Bentley stated, "Having this information at their fingertips will help doctors make urgent decisions about which treatments should be applied to patients who have had a stroke."

The researchers noted that the goal is for patients to be treated faster and more accurately through the new artificial intelligence technology.

The results of the study were published in the journal "Nature Digital Medicine".
