It has been revealed that the government plans a maximum salary increase of 20 percent for employees and retirees at the beginning of the year. According to a report by Erdal Sağlam from 10 Haber, Central Bank Governor Fatih Karahan stated in response to questions from foreign investors that they have based their own calculations on a 15-20 percent increase at the start of the year.
Erdal Sağlam included the following statements in his report:
Central Bank Governor Fatih Karahan attended a meeting organized by a foreign brokerage firm in London last month, and after giving his presentation, he answered questions from the investors in attendance. One of the questions asked was about how much of a raise would be given to the minimum wage, employees, and retirees at the beginning of the year, and what rate they were using for their calculations.
Regarding this question, Karahan stated that the raises implemented at the beginning of 2024 were at high rates, and therefore, minimum wage earners and other employees would not receive anything as an inflation adjustment this year.
Following this, they recalled that the inflation target set for 2025 is 14 percent and the upper limit of the established inflation corridor is 21 percent, stating, 'We are making our calculations accordingly; New Year's salary increases will be implemented at a rate of 15 percent, at most 20 percent.'
Therefore, it is clear that under the 'incomes policy' heading within the scope of the new economic program, the policy of 'salary increases based on targeted inflation rather than past inflation' will be in effect.
For some time now, discussions have already begun regarding what the salary increase rates for employees and retirees will be at the start of the year, and reports have emerged that, in accordance with the program, increases will be at most 20 to 25 percent.
These remarks by Central Bank Governor Fatih Karahan to foreign investors indicate that this issue has been discussed and a definitive decision has been reached within the economic administration.
