An indictment prepared against actor Cem Yiğit Üzümoğlu due to a social media post has been accepted.
The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has requested a prison sentence of up to 7 years and 6 months for Üzümoğlu and 20 other defendants on charges of "establishing an organization for the purpose of committing a crime."
INDICTMENT APPROVED
Üzümoğlu was detained in recent months and subsequently released for supporting the boycott call initiated by CHP Chairman Özgür Özel following the detention of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu on March 19.
The prosecutor's office prepared the indictment with the view that this action should be evaluated within the scope of "organized crime."
Cem Yiğit Üzümoğlu expressed his astonishment regarding the lawsuit filed against him and the requested sentence with the following words:
“To be honest, I am having difficulty understanding this.
I am being tried with a request for seven and a half years in prison for doing what many others have done, which is repeating the statement made by President Tayyip Erdoğan in a tweet sent by the Presidential Communications Directorate on January 6: ‘One of the effective methods to bring those who sell expensive products to their knees is a boycott.
Our greatest trump card against those who engage in opportunism is to use the freedom of not purchasing.’”
