OpenAI has expanded the reach of its popular AI chatbot ChatGPT, making it possible to send queries via WhatsApp.
This innovation allows WhatsApp's 2.7 billion users worldwide to chat with ChatGPT, while users in the US can also make voice calls to the AI assistant by dialing 1-800-ChatGPT.
This move is part of OpenAI's strategy to bring artificial intelligence to wider audiences. The company aims to facilitate access to AI by connecting ChatGPT with more users.
"We care a lot about lowering the barriers to trying AI and seeing what this technology can do for people," said OpenAI product manager Antonia Woodford, adding, "We are thrilled to bring ChatGPT to two familiar channels: phone and WhatsApp."
WhatsApp users can add the number +1 1800 242 8478 to their contacts to chat with ChatGPT, while users in the US can call this number to engage in voice conversations.
The phone service is currently only available to users in the US, and anyone calling from a US number is entitled to 15 minutes of free usage per month.
The ChatGPT chatbot on WhatsApp does not require an OpenAI account login, but it only supports text chat and is limited to information up to September 2021.
OpenAI plans to add new features such as visual analysis and web search to these platforms in the future. However, there is no definitive information yet on when these innovations will be introduced or which countries will have access to these features.
