An agreement has been signed to establish an institutional structure through a company to be formed in partnership with the Turkish Environment Agency, the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey (TOBB), and the Confederation of Turkish Tradesmen and Craftsmen (TESK) for the Deposit Management System. This company will manage all processes, from the collection of deposits and the installation of deposit return machines to the reimbursement of funds to citizens.
HOW WILL THE DEPOSIT SYSTEM WORK?
Citizens will be able to send plastic, glass, and aluminum packaging marked as suitable for recycling with the DOA (Packaging with Deposit) logo for recycling via "DOA return machines." A deposit return fee, referred to as a "deposit incentive fee," will be determined based on the type of packaging. A separate e-wallet account will be created for each citizen via the DOA mobile application to be downloaded to their phones. The amount for each piece of packaging returned to the deposit return machines will be refunded to the citizen through the DOA application. This system is expected to collect and recycle approximately 25 billion pieces of packaging annually. It aims to provide an annual saving of 520 million euros.
HOW TO USE DOA MACHINES?
- Download the DOA application to your smartphone or tablet and open the app.
- Click the Deposit Return Transaction button in the DOA application.
- Show the QR code generated on your phone screen to the QR code reader on the machine.
- Place your packaging with a deposit into the feeding hopper.
- Once your transaction is complete, the deposit refund amount will be loaded into your DOA digital wallet.
WHEN WILL THE DEPOSIT RETURN SYSTEM START?
Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Murat Kurum announced that the deposit return system will be implemented within 2025. As part of the project, the installation of deposit return machines will begin first in Sakarya, and residents of Sakarya will be able to return packaging and receive a deposit refund. By the end of 2025, the goal is to have deposit return machines and infrastructure installed in every province and district of Turkey.
