CAR T-cell (Chimeric Antigen Receptor T-cell) technology, considered revolutionary in the fight against cancer, will be produced in Turkey. Prof. Dr. Erdal Karaöz, Director of the Medical Stem Cell Production Center, announced that Turkey is about to establish its own laboratory in this field.
It was stated that the special cells to be produced in the center will directly target and destroy cancer cells.
Speaking at an information meeting held in Samsun, Prof. Dr. Karaöz said, "Our goal is to offer these powerful immune cells to the service of Turkish patients within 6 months to 1 year. This is a major step for Turkey in terms of developing its own technology in cancer treatment."
PROMISING TREATMENT WITH STEM CELLS
Karaöz stated that medicine is insufficient in providing definitive solutions for some diseases, pointing out that cell loss in neurodegenerative diseases, in particular, cannot be reversed.
Emphasizing that dead cells cannot be replaced in diseases such as Parkinson's and Type 1 Diabetes, Karaöz said that stem cell-based therapies could fill this gap.
PRODUCTION WILL BE CARRIED OUT UNDER STRICT SUPERVISION
Reminding that cellular therapies can only be applied with cells produced under Ministry of Health approval and GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) standards, Karaöz also drew attention to abuses in this field.
"Practices that are not based on scientific data and give false hope to patients should be avoided. Cellular therapy should only be performed on appropriate patient groups with scientifically based approaches," he said.
CONCERN THAT 'STEM CELLS CAUSE CANCER' IS GROUNDLESS
Clarifying questions about whether stem cells cause cancer, Karaöz said that adult stem cells used in clinical applications have not shown any serious side effects or cancer risk to date.
TARGET: SOLID TUMORS AND AUTOIMMUNE DISEASES
Stating that the CAR T-cell production laboratory to be established will be located at Liv Hospital Vadi Istanbul, Karaöz noted that immune cells programmed to recognize cancer cells will be produced and administered to patients at this center.
"This treatment method could be a hope not only for blood cancers but also for solid tumors and autoimmune diseases in the future process," he stated.
With this investment, Turkey aims to be among the few countries advancing in the field of cellular immunotherapy simultaneously with the rest of the world.
