Experts, pointing out that hair graying, which has increased in every age group in recent years, is accelerated by the unconscious use of hair products, emphasized the importance of choosing the right products.
Dermatology Specialist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Özlem Ekiz explained the ways to protect hair health and the damages caused by the use of incorrect products.
CHEMICAL INGREDIENTS DAMAGE CELLS
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ekiz stated that hair graying is linked not only to genetic factors but also to environmental influences and the products used.
"The color of our hair is formed thanks to the melanin pigment produced by cells called melanocytes. As we age, the activity of these cells decreases and hair begins to turn gray. However, in recent years, a significant increase in hair graying has been observed even at young ages. Especially chemical-based hair dyes, bleaches, and sprays can damage melanocyte cells and lead to premature graying," she said.
AVOID PRODUCTS CONTAINING SULFATE AND SILICONE
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ekiz stated that the ingredients of some hair care products on the market must be checked. Pointing out that shampoos containing sulfate can disrupt the hair's natural oil balance and weaken the roots, Ekiz noted that while silicone-based products may provide shine in the short term, they will coat the hair strands and prevent them from breathing with long-term use.
Ekiz warned about hair dyes, saying, "Dyes containing ammonia and peroxide not only lead to color changes but can also cause premature graying."
USE NATURAL INGREDIENTS
Stating that the fundamental step in protecting hair health is choosing the right product, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ekiz emphasized that natural and organic products with low chemical content should be preferred.
AVOID WASHING TOO FREQUENTLY
Avoid washing your hair too frequently; washing it 2-3 times a week is sufficient. Stress can accelerate hair loss and graying, so stay away from stress. Additionally, eat a balanced diet to address vitamin and mineral deficiencies, and you can consult your doctor for support if necessary.
IT MAY BE A SIGN OF HEALTH PROBLEMS
Stating that hair graying is not just an aesthetic problem, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ekiz said, "Sudden and rapid graying can be a sign of certain health problems.
In particular, vitamin B12 deficiency, thyroid diseases, and autoimmune diseases can negatively affect hair health. Therefore, it is important to consult a dermatology specialist and have the necessary tests performed," emphasizing that premature graying should not be ignored.
