Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian held a meeting in Tehran with members of parliament from the Hormozgan and Sistan and Baluchestan provinces. During the meeting, development projects and environmental issues in the country's southern and southeastern provinces were discussed.

WHAT DID PEZESHKIAN SAY?

Pezeshkian emphasized that the capital, Tehran, needs to be moved to another city and announced that work in this direction has begun. The President stated that he has instructed First Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref to oversee the process.

Pezeshkian said, "If we ignore the issue, we may face very major environmental crises and problems as a country in the future."

'WE ARE LOSING TIME FOR TEHRAN'

President Pezeshkian said, "Whatever we do for Tehran, we are losing time. We have to move the country's new economic and political center to a point further south and closer to the sea."

WHY IS THE CAPITAL BEING MOVED FROM TEHRAN?

Tehran, with a population of approximately 20 million, has served as Iran's capital and administrative center since 1788. However, the rapidly increasing population and city size are creating serious infrastructure problems and environmental challenges in Tehran.

RELOCATION WAS ALSO ON THE AGENDA DURING THE AHMADINEJAD ERA

Problems such as air pollution and water scarcity, in particular, are reopening the debate on alternative solutions, including moving the capital. The idea of moving the capital was first brought to the agenda during Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's presidency between 2005 and 2013.

A COUNCIL HAD BEEN ESTABLISHED IN PARLIAMENT

During that period, it was decided to establish a special council in parliament to determine an alternative location for the capital. However, no final steps were taken toward moving the capital as a result of the work carried out. Today, this debate is gaining importance again due to increasing difficulties.
